Activity Routines For Chilly Weather

If this is you, this month opt for gentle forms of exercise that suit the winter season — we have a long list of options for you to try below. These can help you stay active so when March does arrive, it will be easier to get out and move more.

Yoga or Pilates:

These poses can help improve flexibility, strength, and relaxation. There are plenty of online classes to follow along with.

Bodyweight exercises:

Push-ups, squats, lunges, and planks are simple and effective ways to stay in shape without needing any special equipment.

Dance routines:

Put on some music and dance around your living room to keep warm and energized.

Winter Sports:

Ice skating:

If you have access to a rink, skating is a fun way to get your heart rate up while embracing the season.

Skiing or snowboarding: If you’re near a mountain or a snowy area, hitting the slopes can be exhilarating and a great full-body workout.

Cross-country skiing or snowshoeing: These are lower-impact, but still excellent ways to get outside and enjoy the winter landscape.

Walking or Hiking (Bundled Up):

Dress in layers, including moisture-wicking base layers and waterproof outerwear, and take a brisk walk in the cold. Fresh air is refreshing, and walking is easy on the body.

Winter Running (With Precaution):

If you’re an avid runner, don’t let the cold stop you—just make sure to dress appropriately (think layers, thermal gear, and shoes with proper traction). Stay aware of ice or snow on the ground to avoid slips.

Home Fitness Challenges:

If you’d rather stay indoors, you can set up a fun home fitness challenge, like doing a certain number of squats or jumping jacks each day, or testing yourself with circuit training.

Virtual Fitness Classes:

There are a ton of live and pre-recorded options online, from high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to strength training to cycling, allowing you to get a full workout without braving the cold.

Sauna or Hot Bath After Exercise:

After working up a sweat, reward yourself with a sauna or hot bath to help your muscles relax and recover. It’s a cozy way to warm up after being outside!
