Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month, a perfect opportunity to embrace the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans. They point out that the most nutritious diet on earth is the Mediterranean approach, and this emphasizes eating behavior rather than merely counting nutrients.

This pattern of eating is characterized by its rich variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and healthy fats, particularly olive oil. To adopt this pattern, instead of fixating on calorie counts or macronutrient ratios, make sure your meal is real food, and that you control food volume through your eating behaviors.

Just as important is to make meals a social event. Sharing food with family and friends fosters connection and joy, transforming eating into a communal activity that promotes mental health.

From the standpoint of your health, returning to the family table also supports healthier eating habits. If you’re talking with those around you, you take more time with your food so allow your brain a chance to hear the “full signals” before overconsuming.

This March, let’s celebrate National Nutrition Month by embracing these principles: eat real food, control portions mindfully, and enjoy meals together.

By doing so, we can create a more fulfilling and health-conscious approach to nutrition that resonates with our lifestyles.
