Its The Sugar, Sweetie
Table showing all the synonyms for sugar added to food products |
This article asks the question of whether we should label food products to include “sugar added” for the times when massive amounts of sugar is added?
Of course we should. It’s not even a question. Americans eat about 150 pounds of sugar per person per year. And 3/4 of that metric tonnage comes from processed food products. So why in the world would we not want to decrease that obscene volume?
The only reason you’d want to prevent that is if you knew that letting people know what was actually in the product would decrease the chances that they’d buy your product. The only reason you’d NOT want to label is because you wanted to limit the crazy amounts of sugar people are eating.
There are a couple of ways to decrease that massive amount of sugar in our food products. The first is a top-down strategy, and the other is a bottom up strategy. In the first case (top down), you can go all Michael Bloomberg on it, make it a mandate from above and write a law. But until that happens, the bottom up strategy may be better.
Demand drives supply. Say you want it … or say you don’t want it. When you let your voice be heard, the people who want your money will give you that.
