Got Statins? May Want To Give Them Back!

A study just pubbed in the Archives of Internal Medicine deals yet another blow to the blanket use of statins, and the efforts of the pharmaceutical industry to make them a public utility.

Hot water, Cold Water, Electricity, Statin Pills.

Pfizer’s Lipitor and AstraZeneca’s Crestor are being pushed as something everyone should take — not just for the disease condition, but to prevent heart disease from ever happening in the first place. In other words, they want to expand their market to include every single person alive.

Good for the company, if they can get people to believe it and swallow the advice.

The data, however, argue against this absurd position. According to the study authors, There is little evidence that statins reduce the risk of dying from any cause in individuals without heart disease.

This, along with harms caused by statins in some subgroups, have called into question the benefit of statins in primary prevention (prevention of the development of heart disease).

So. Maybe the reason statins are NOT preventing heart problems is because they’re obviously very busy working over your other internal organs. A study published just last month (Here is the study in case you’re as anal as I am) found that people taking them may have higher risks of liver dysfunction, kidney failure, muscle weakness and cataracts.

Nice. The health of their bottom line is not necessarily benefited by yours.
