Nutrition Month is 50 Shades of Crazy

OMG, whatever you do, do NOT eat chocolate! It gives you zits, makes you super fat, keeps you up at night because of the caffeine, rots your teeth, and while it’s not doing all those terrible things to you it’s helping your body develop diabetes.

BTW, the bullet points in the pic to the left are all just as untrue as the above rant-list of reasons typically listed for why you should give up chocolate.

I wrote an entire book about the health properties of chocolate (link here), but for this post let’s just talk about metabolism. I’m not talking about the fallacy that chocolate creates hyperactivity in children. This was a suspicion proffered as nutrition advice, that turned out to have zero foundation beyond pedestrian speculation.

High cocoa chocolate does 2 things that boost your metabolism:

  1. It’s consistent consumption can increase the number and efficiency of muscular organelles called Mitochondria. These make energy for you.
  2. It’s consistent consumption can also increase the blood flow into muscles, which brings more oxygen and nutrients to these energy producing Mitochondria.
